Fire Extinguisher Safety: Know When and How to Use It

Fire extinguishers are a vital part of fire safety, but they must be used correctly and responsibly. Remember, they are not a replacement for an evacuation plan—always call 911 immediately in case of a fire.

Choosing the Right Fire Extinguisher

A multipurpose ABC fire extinguisher is ideal for most household and business settings. It can be used on:

  • Grease fires
  • Paper and wood fires
  • Electrical fires
Keep one in your home, workplace, vehicle, and recreational vehicle for added safety.

The PASS Method: How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Follow these four steps to operate an extinguisher effectively:
P – Pull the pin
A – Aim at the base of the fire
S – Squeeze the handle
S – Sweep the nozzle side to side to cover the fire

Before stepping closer to the fire, stand about 6 feet away and activate the extinguisher. Only approach if the fire begins to diminish.

A fire extinguisher can help contain small fires, but your safety comes first—if the fire grows, evacuate immediately and let professionals handle the situation.

Fire extinguishers can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the Fire Department arrives.
