Community Emergency Response Team

EDH-CERT-Logo-2025

The CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) program educates volunteers on disaster preparedness and equips them with essential disaster response skills. Training covers first aid, triage, fire safety, light search and rescue, and team organization, preparing volunteers to assist during emergencies. CERT provides a nationwide, standardized approach to volunteer training, allowing professional responders to focus on more complex tasks while volunteers support critical foundational work.

Upon completing CERT training, volunteers become invaluable affiliates for El Dorado Hills Fire and local public safety agencies. They can assist in community events such as Smoke Detector Giveaways, the Vacant Lot Program, safety and prevention education, outreach initiatives, and stand-by first aid during emergencies.

El Dorado Hills Fire Department CERT Training Includes:

  • Identifying local risks and preparing for them
  • Managing utilities and hazardous materials and using fire extinguishers to put out small fires
  • Using the "START Triage" system to address the “Three Medical Killers” — opening airways, controlling bleeding, and treating for shock
  • Providing basic medical aid
  • Conducting safe victim search and rescue during declared disasters
  • Organizing teams and coordinating volunteers to gather disaster intelligence and support first responder efforts
  • Understanding disaster psychology
  • Gaining terrorism awareness
