Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) and Wildfire Preparedness

PG&E is taking additional precautionary measures to help reduce the risk of wildfires. When extreme fire danger conditions threaten a portion of the electric system serving the community, PG&E may turn off electricity to help protect public safety. This is known as a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS).

What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS)?

A PSPS is an event where PG&E proactively shuts off power to certain areas in order to reduce the risk of wildfires during times of extreme fire danger. This may be necessary when high winds, dry conditions, and other fire risks present an elevated danger to the electric grid.

How to Prepare for a PSPS

If a PSPS is implemented in your area, it's important to be prepared. Here are some things you can do to make sure you're ready:

  • Have a Plan: Make sure your family knows what to do in case of a power outage. Consider backup power sources like portable generators, and ensure they are safely set up.
  • Prepare an Emergency Kit: Stock up on essentials like flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and medications.
  • Charge Your Devices: Before an anticipated PSPS, make sure your cell phone and other devices are fully charged.
  • Stay Informed: Sign up for PG&E alerts and stay up-to-date on any PSPS events.
