A Training and Mentorship Program for Aspiring Firefighters

The El Dorado Hills Fire Department, in partnership with the Folsom Fire Department, offers an outstanding Explorer Program designed for high school students interested in a future career in the fire service. This program provides a unique opportunity for students to participate in fire department training and engage in public service activities alongside professional firefighters in the El Dorado Hills and Folsom communities.

By joining the Explorer Program, students gain invaluable hands-on experience and essential skills while making meaningful contributions to their community. This program serves as a vital stepping stone for aspiring firefighters, fostering the next generation of dedicated public servants.

Program Overview

Program Goals

The primary objective of the Explorer Program is to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to advance their fire service education at local community colleges. The program aims to thoroughly prepare students for entry into Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Fire Academy courses, setting a strong foundation for their future careers.

Training and Learning Opportunities

Participants in the Explorer Program drill twice per month, normally all day Saturday, providing them with hands-on experience and comprehensive training in various aspects of fire service. The curriculum covers an array of topics, including:

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): Lifesaving techniques essential for emergency response
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA): Training in the use of breathing equipment necessary for entering hazardous environments
Ladders: Proper use and safety procedures for different types of ladders used in firefighting operations
Vehicle Extrication: Techniques for rescuing individuals trapped in vehicles following accidents
Fire Suppression: Methods and strategies for effectively combating fires
Fire Hose Handling: Training in the use of fire hoses, including deployment, operation, and maintenance
Fire Department Regulations: Understanding the rules and regulations governing fire department operations and firefighter conduct
Physical Training: Preparing cadets for the rigorous role of a Firefighter

All training sessions are led by experienced Fire Department personnel, ensuring that students receive high-quality, practical instruction.

Community Service Involvement

In addition to the rigorous training, Explorers are expected to actively participate in various community service events. These events include:

Santa Run: A festive event bringing joy to the community during the holiday season
Pancake Breakfast: Community Event
Smoke Detector Giveaways: Promoting fire safety by distributing smoke detectors to residents
Active Shooter Training: Preparing for emergencies involving active shooters to ensure community safety
