History

The El Dorado Hills Fire Department Honor Guard was established in 2004, born from the shared grief and deep respect for those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. The need for an Honor Guard became evident after a series of tragic events that deeply impacted our department and community.

In 2003, off-duty Fire Captain Dan Nightengale from Foster City Fire lost his life in a fatal vehicle accident in the El Dorado Hills area. Several of our current Honor Guard members responded to the scene, where they encountered a heartbreaking situation—Captain Nightengale’s wife, children, and family dog left without a husband and father. This tragedy resonated deeply with the responders, leaving a lasting impression.

Just months later, on October 27, 2003, the El Dorado Hills Fire Department suffered a profound loss of its own. Firefighter Ryan Gabriel Shreve passed away due to a head injury sustained while enjoying his time off duty, much like Captain Nightengale. These two devastating events ignited a commitment within several members of the department to establish an Honor Guard dedicated to paying tribute to the fallen and supporting their families.

Present Day

Today, the El Dorado Hills Fire Department Honor Guard is a highly trained unit composed of thirteen dedicated members. Each member has undergone rigorous training, including the one-week Goshen Police Department Honor Guard Camp in Indiana or the El Dorado Hills Honor Guard Camp instructed by DFL Honor Guard Training. Additionally, several members have trained with The Old Guard of Fort Myer, further honing their ceremonial expertise.
