Flooding and winter storms can strike with little warning—bringing high winds, heavy rain, road closures, and power outages. The El Dorado Hills Fire Department is committed to helping our community prepare, respond, and recover from these weather-related emergencies.
Below you’ll find key tips and resources to help protect your family, home, and neighborhood during storm season.

How to Prepare

Before the Storm: Prepare Ahead

• Stay Informed: Sign up for local alerts via El Dorado County Emergency Alerts and monitor trusted weather sources like the National Weather Service.
• Make an Emergency Kit: Include flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, water, a first aid kit, blankets, medications, and a phone charger.
• Clear Drains & Gutters: Remove debris from storm drains, downspouts, and culverts around your property to reduce flooding risk.
• Know Your Flood Zone: Check if your home is in a flood-prone area by visiting FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center.
• Prepare for Power Outages: Have extra batteries, backup power for medical devices, and a safe heat source if temperatures drop.

During the Storm: Stay Safe

• Avoid Driving Through Flooded Roads: Just six inches of water can stall a car, and one foot can carry it away. Turn around, don’t drown.
• Stay Indoors: Keep away from windows during strong winds. Use caution with alternate heat sources—never use a BBQ, gas stove, or generator indoors.
• Watch for Updates: Listen to emergency broadcasts and follow evacuation orders if issued.

After the Storm: Stay Alert

• Report Hazards: Contact emergency services for downed power lines, blocked roads, or flood damage.
• Inspect with Caution: Watch for structural damage, gas leaks, and electrical hazards. Avoid walking through floodwaters.
• Check on Neighbors: Especially older adults, individuals with disabilities, or those who may need additional help recovering.

Sandbag Locations

Sandbags may be available for El Dorado County Residents during storm events to help protect your property from flooding.

We typically have pre-filled sandbags available for pickup. However, if sandbags are not pre-filled when you arrive, you are welcome to bring a shovel and fill your own. If you need assistance, please check in with one of our personnel at the front desk—we're happy to help whenever possible.
